Areas of Expertise
Sylvia’s passion lies in talent management, leadership development and management diversity, and helping individuals to grow and develop.
Having held the HR and Talent Management portfolio for Shell and CapitaLand Limited, she is well versed with the challenges in human capital management as well as international best practices. Her prior experiences as a chemical engineer and business leader have also made her a pragmatist. Having gone through the leadership assessment and development journey herself, and has had the responsibility of assessing, developing and coaching high potential leaders both from a business leader’s and an HR professional’s perspective, Sylvia has in-depth understanding of the fundamentals and critical success factors of personal development, both at business’ and individual’s level.
Sylvia has rich experience in the work of ‘management diversity’, as she was one of the pioneers in Shell to develop strategy and action plan for implementation so as to harness the larger and varied pool of talents which is a key talent development consideration for organisations in today’s complex and competitive world.
She sees people development as a cornerstone to an organisation’s success. Sylvia’s passion to help others grow and succeed started with mentoring and coaching in the corporate arena. She is continuing with this work, building on the successes she has had in helping individuals tackle a wide range of issues and challenges for personal and career growth. She also delivers personal and career development sessions to the undergraduates at the Singapore universities.
Professional Experience
Sylvia started her career in 1983 as a chemical engineer and attained Chartered Engineer status in 1990. The global nature of Shell, the job rotation and people development opportunities that it offered had been the cornerstone to the wide range of experiences and competencies that Sylvia had acquired. These included refinery operations, engineering design, economics and planning, strategy and investments, and talent development. She was cross posted twice to the UK and The Netherlands.
Sylvia held regional and global roles of vastly differing nature from 2000 to 2008. After 22 years in Shell, Sylvia was headhunted to join CapitaLand as Head of HR. Moving from Shell to CapitaLand, Sylvia’s unique contribution was the blending of western best practices and Asian management styles with balance and effectiveness. Sylvia left the corporate world in 2008 to pursue personal interests, such as philanthro-capitalism and volunteerism.
